THE GATE OF MERCY (YEMIHRET DEJ) Renewing the joy and hope of parents

Yemihret Dej Charity Center is an organisation that helps children with special needs and their parents. Many of these children are unable to feed, move, or defecate on their own, and they are supported by their parents or other caregivers around the clock.

Ninety percent of these special needs children live with their mothers, putting the mothers at a greater disadvantage. They find it difficult to raise their children while working all day, as their children constantly require assistance. When husbands or fathers discover that their children have special needs, instead of providing support, they often abandon them, leaving the burden of care solely on the mothers. These thoughtless acts of irresponsible men force mothers to lead difficult lives. Most of these single mothers would prefer death to live with this ongoing tragedy. Their struggles with extreme poverty and emotional distress can make them feel as if they are lesser than those who have passed away. In response to the tragedy faced by these mothers, the Gate of Mercy was established.

The centre brings fifteen to twenty sick children and an equal number of parents from their homes to the centre for breakfast, lunch, and snacks from Monday to Thursday in a rented space in the city of Addis Ababa. Bringing these exhausted parents to the centre allows them to experience the love of God. They take a break, maintain their hygiene and change their clothes as required. Additionally, the parents who come to the centre develop friendships and hope when they spend time together with other parents and volunteers at the centre.

Yemihret Dej Charity Center, by the grace of God, is seriously expanding its horizon of gracious service to the needy. For example, in October 2024 alone, the centre served 30 parents and 31 special needs children. At the time of the publication of this pamphlet, the centre donated 3,000 to 5,000 birr to 103 parents. It has also decided to provide the same amount to help those mothers every month. These mothers prefer taking any kind of job rather than begging on the street. However, when they work for minimum wages, such as cleaning houses, washing dishes, or doing laundry, they sadly have to tie their special needs children to a chair for a certain amount of time. Yemihret Dej was established to stop this miserable situation.

So far, these children and parents have been supported by Ethiopians living in Ethiopia and abroad. Hopefully, others will follow suit. Meanwhile, it is with great joy and adoration that I inform you that several compassionate individuals serve as role models to many of us by demonstrating the love of God in action. Some help as institutions by sponsoring up to ten, nine, six, five, three, or two families, while others sponsor one family. This kind of action pleases God, the donors, the victims, and the community as a whole.

Yemihret Dej is a centre that welcomes parents and children, treating everyone equally and prioritizing the belief that all individuals are created in the image of God, regardless of race, language, or religion.
To participate in the support provided at this centre, we respectfully ask you to support a child and a parent by donating body soap, laundry soap, hair and body lotion, diapers, dry food, and more.

The assistance we give to the sick and needy will serve as a legacy of good deeds that will earn us praise before God, by what the Lord Jesus said in Matthew 25:36, “For I was sick and you visited me; I was in prison and you came to me.”

May the Most High God reward you for your compassionate support!

Yemihret Dej Charity Center is a center established under the Elshaddai Television Network!
